The cycling team - including Capt Longley, WO1 Wakeham, CSgt Smith, Sgt Berrow. PO Vennard, and Sgt Benson are preparing to journey from RMR London, Royal Marines Barracks, Wandsworth through to various checkpoints including Brighton, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight before reaching their final destination in Longmore.
They have managed to raise more than £600.00 for their chosen charity so far, and aim to raise just shy of £1,500.00 in total.
The Team was brought together by Mick Wakeham WO1 at RMR London, and consists of 4 Royal Marines and 2 Royal Navy Reservists. The team have come together after one member had received personal and financial support from the charity in recent years and wanted the opportunity to do something to give back to those who can benefit from the amazing support the Royal Marines Charity can provide.
The Royal Marines Charity exists to help the entire Royal Marines family. They are strong believers in ‘once a Marine, always a Marine’, offering a range of services to both serving regulars and reservists and veterans, and their families. From financial assistance, health and support services, to advice on finding a meaningful career after service.
The Commanding Officer of RMR London, Lt Col Olly Todd said,
“This is a great example of Royal Navy and Royal Marines, regulars and reservists together taking on a challenge which will push them both physically and mentally and in doing so they will be raising money for a cause which is important to all of us. As they surely emulate the pro cyclists of the Tour de France, I say ‘chapeau’ and wish them good luck."
