On 14 March the Greater London Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association held their annual Lord-Lieutenant Awards. The Awards recognise those Reservists, Cadets and Adult Instructors who have displayed outstanding commitment and service.
Award recipients from units based in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham are WO2 Tim Wates from F (RIFLES) Company - London Regiment and Lieutenant Matthew Saunders from Command and Support (Westminster Dragoons) Squadron, The Royal Yeomanry. Both men received the Lord Lieutenants Certificate for Meritorious Service which recognises outstanding service and devotion to duty in the service of the Reserve Forces over a considerable period.
WO2 Tim Wates
WO2 Tim Wates joined A (London Scottish) Company – London Regiment in 2003 and has been deployed to Iraq (2004) and Afghanistan (2006 and 2010). While deployed in Afghanistan WO2 Wates was made Section Commander and then in 2010 promoted to Sergeant where he led a team mentoring the Afghan National Army’s instructors at their Infantry Academy.
In 2015 WO2 Wates transferred to F Company 7 Rifles, now part of the London Regiment. He worked in various roles from heading Recruit Training, to Mortar Platoon 2-IC and ending up as Command Sergeant MajorF Company. In his civilian career, Tim is a Senior Compliance/Policy Advisor with the Ministry of Justice. He is married to Rachel with two sets of twins aged 8 and 3.
Speaking on Tim’s longstanding commitment to the Reserve Forces his Commanding Officer said “WO2 Wates has been an ever present steadying hand, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure F Company continue to deliver effect and grow in numbers.”
Lt Matthew Saunders
Currently based at The Royal Yeomanry Regimental Headquarters in Fulham House, Lt Matthew Saunders has served with the Army Reserve for 15 years. In 2011 he volunteered to serve as a soldier/rifleman in Afghanistan, emphasising his level of commitment and personal sacrifice. Officer Commanding C&S, The Royal Yeomanry described Lt Saunders as one of the most reliable and capable young officers he has had the pleasure to command. “His personal sacrifice is remarkable and always exceeds the expectations of his subordinates, peers and superiors”.
Lt Saunders is a recipient of the Volunteer Reserve Service Medal and holds an Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan. He has worked in the City of London as an Insurance Broker since 2007 and is currently a Vice President at Marsh UK Limited, specialising in banking and asset management insurance. Marsh UK are signatories to the Armed Forces Covenant, apromise by the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.
