On Tuesday 12 June, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, delivered the 2018 Lord Mayor’s Defence and Security Lecture at the Mansion House.
The event was attended by over 300 delegates including members of the Armed Forces and representatives from City Livery Companies and City businesses.
Sir Stephen began by thanking the Lord Mayor for his outstanding support of the Armed Forces, including the Reserve Forces and Cadets. He acknowledged the enduring relationship between the City and the nation’s Armed Forces and the Royal Air Force especially, citing the important connection between prosperity and security:
“….there can be no prosperity without security, and no security without prosperity. So there we have the Armed Forces and the City, locked together in a mutually beneficial dependency”.
In the year of the Royal Air Force’s 100th anniversary, Sir Stephen commemorated the achievements of the RAF and highlighted the common goals shared by the RAF and the City.
“We share a common goal of being a force for good; of supporting young people and developing their skills, to ensure we can sustain success in the future; of recognising and encouraging talent, ambition and potential, regardless of where it comes from.”
Reflecting on the spectrum of current and future threats facing our society he stated that “success will come to those who develop and maintain the agile, multi-role capabilities – equipment and people”.
In conclusion, he acknowledged the inspiration today’s RAF draws from its proud heritage, noting however that it will be through our young people’s efforts that our continued security and prosperity is assured.
“The sky has never been the limit for the Royal Air Force or the brilliant men and women – regular and reserve – who serve within its ranks.”
